Improving Containment and Allergen Control in Animal Transfer Stations with the AniGARD® e3

In environments where lab animals are transferred or cages are cleaned, the right equipment plays a crucial role in protecting both the animals and the lab personnel. The AniGARD® e3 animal transfer station stands out as a clean bench that combines enhanced containment with ergonomic access and verified protection – all supported by rigorous, ISO-adapted testing methods.

Why Air Quality Matters in Animal Transfer

Animal transfer stations function similarly to clean benches, designed to prevent environmental contamination for sensitive procedures like cage changes. The AniGARD® e3 achieves ISO Class 4 air cleanliness, which means it filters particles with remarkable efficiency offering assurance that animals are not exposed to harmful airborne contaminants.

Protecting the Animals: Equivalent to a Biosafety Cabinet

In typical labs, Class II biosafety cabinets (BSCs) are used for both personnel and product protection. However, their limited front-only access can hinder productivity in cage-handling workflows.

The AniGARD® e3 overcomes this with open access on three sides and a high-velocity momentum air curtain that forms a protective barrier without blocking access.

Using an adapted version of the NSF Standard 49 microbiologicial aerosol test for product protection, the AniGARD® e3 achieved:

  • Zero or near-zero CFUs (colony-forming units) at all tested access points, giving high passing results.
  • A 6-log reduction in contaminants – equal to 99.9999% effectiveness in blocking environmental microbes from entering the work area.

Personnel Protection: Containing Allergens Where It Matters

Occupational exposure to animal dander and allergens is a significant health risk in research settings. While traditional clean benches aren’t designed to protect the user, the AniGARD® e3 was tested to see just how much it could mitigate allergen exposure.

Using a microbiological aerosol challenge:

  • The unit achieved another 6-log reduction in particle release.
  • All test results stayed well below the benchmark for biosafety cabinet failure.

While not a full replacement for a Class II BSC, the AniGARD® e3 approaches an equal level of personnel protection – an exceptional outcome for a clean bench.

Cage-to-Cage Cross-Contamination: Virtually Eliminated

Maintaining clean air between cages is critical in preventing cross-infection or contamination in lab settings. To simulate real-world cage handling, Baker engineers modified the test setup to reflect vertical particle movement, more representative of how animal dander behaves in an airstream.  Several cages were set up in the AniGARD® e3 at the same time to reflect more real-life use scenarios.

Tests across multiple cage configurations showed:

  • Zero CFUs in most cases, with a few isolated counts of one CFU.
  • Another 6-log reduction in microbial transfer.
