Over 30 years of collaboration: Bejo Seeds and The Baker Company thrive

What began in 1994 with the delivery of the first laboratory setup has grown into a long-standing and intensive collaboration between The Baker Company (Clean Air) and Bejo Seeds. For over 30 years, the seed breeder and the laboratory solutions provider have worked together to create a safe, efficient, and innovative laboratory environment.

Bejo Seeds, a globally leading producer of disease-free seeds with high germination rates, tests its seeds in highly controlled environments. The CleanAir cabinets from The Baker Company have been at the heart of these laboratories for decades. Today, Bejo operates 41 units, including 40 CleanAir cabinets. These ensure sterile conditions essential for seed breeding, DNA analyses, and the detection of fungi and bacteria.

The Baker Company: “Customer-focused innovation is what connects us”

Customer-focused innovation

“Our collaboration with Bejo Seeds is a perfect example of customer-focused innovation,” says Joan Plas, Teamleader Sales at The Baker Company. “We actively contribute ideas, develop custom solutions, and ensure our technicians are always up to date. This dedication is reflected in the minimal number of malfunctions: only five in three years.”

Indispensable

“The cabinets from The Baker Company are indispensable in our laboratories. They not only guarantee safety, but are also proactively maintained and tailored to our specific needs,” says Gerard van der Wal from Bejo Seeds. “Thanks to their customization and reliability, we can continue to innovate in seed quality and phytosanitary assurance.”

Beyond standard solutions

The collaboration goes beyond standard solutions. The Baker Company provides custom-made cabinets with smart innovations, such as integrated Bunsen burners and specially colored work surfaces that help reduce eye strain during long laboratory sessions. Recently, outdated units were replaced with ergonomically optimized models, allowing Bejo to further enhance user safety and comfort.

Tailored design

An integrated Bunsen burner in a workstation cabinet is one of the requests from Bejo Seeds as part of the desire to further optimize workflows. The burner is built directly into the work surface of the CleanAir cabinets. The Baker Company is currently working on technical drawings to implement this modification in practice. “This is exactly what we stand for and strive for: building cabinets that truly meet the customer’s needs. Not a standard solution, but tailor-made,” says Plas from The Baker Company.

Bejo Seeds employs 2,400 people worldwide, including 600 in Warmenhuizen. The company processes tons of seeds per week, with quality assessed through sampling in eight laboratories. Reliable laboratory equipment, such as Baker Company’s CLF, NEG, BVG, and EFS cabinets, plays a crucial role in this process. These cabinets protect the products, users, and the environment during high-risk or precise work.
