Dr. Kara Brunelle: A Profile Highlight

Dr. Kara Brunelle, Science Director at The Baker Company in Sanford, Maine, represents an important intersection of scientific research, public safety, and regional biotech growth.

Her work focuses on ensuring the integrity of biosafety cabinets which are specialized research enclosures essential for preventing contamination by protecting the product, the environment, and laboratory personnel from harmful biological agents. Her current role involves, among many things, designing, and executing testing protocols including airflow visualization and particle monitoring, to verify that the BSCs perform reliably in real scientific environments.

Dr. Brunelle’s interest in science began during her upbringing in Sanford, where early exposure to logical reasoning and problem solving in school inspired her toward a research trajectory. After entering biomedical sciences during her undergraduate studies at Quinnipiac University, she continued into a PhD program in cell and molecular biology at the University of Vermont, specializing in vascular biology and the mechanisms by which blood vessels regulate blood pressure. This period of bench research, including training at institutions such as Harvard and Yale, reinforced her belief that scientific inquiry allows individuals to discover knowledge that did not previously exist, an experience she describes as both empowering and formative.

Despite her time in major research institutions, Dr. Brunelle ultimately returned to Maine, motivated by proximity to family and by the state’s rapidly expanding biotech industry. Her career demonstrates that high-level scientific work can thrive outside traditional research hubs and that Maine now offers substantial opportunities for scientists seeking both impactful research roles and a strong quality of life. At The Baker Company, she continues to integrate rigorous scientific thinking with applied biosafety innovation, contributing to technologies that protect researchers worldwide.
