As always, we are extremely proud to say that we are Supporting Science, including those highly skilled and dedicated individuals who are helping to make our world a safer place during the current fight against COVID-19.
Behind every COVID-19 test result there is a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Technician who plays crucial part in the scientific research required.
Here at Baker, we have been here to support scientists and their discoveries for the last 7 decades and we will continue to #SupportScience worldwide for several more.
1. Cytiva and Takara Bio agree to collaborate
Cytiva has agreed to collaborate with Takara Bio to manufacture a DNA vaccine candidate for COVID-19. By injecting plasmid DNA which encodes the protein of the target pathogen, the pathogen protein is produced in the body, therefore generating immunity.
2. Roche and Gilead Science prepare to launch a 450 patient trial
Roche is collaborating with Gilead Sciences in preparation to launch a 450- patient trial, which will look to compare the effects of the combination of the Actemra and antiviral drug Remdesivir within severe COVID-19 patients.
3. COVID-19 mouse model reproduces features observed by humans.
A mouse model of COVID-19 infection has been discovered to reproduce features observed within human patients. By using this theory, researchers have generated mice that produce human angiotensin-converting enzymes II (hACE2), this is the receptor that SARS-CoV-2 binds to in order to enter human cells.
4. Merck & Co announce possibility of new business deals
This week, Merck & Co announced the possibility of new business deals, allowing them to gain access to two vaccine candidates and one antiviral drug. The two experimental vaccines come from Themis. Merck & Co intend to acquire Themis as well as collaborate with IAVI on the vaccines. Clinical trials are set to begin later this year.
