Here’s some of the #SupportingScience key updates.
1. Investment from The National Institute of Health
The National Institute of Health have been awarded approximately $234m to improve COVID-19 testing for underserved and vulnerable populations. The new program will support up to 32 institutions across the United States and aims to focus on populations disproportionately affected by the pandemic. The purpose of the program is to understand the COVID-19 testing patterns, strengthen data on disparities in infection rates, disease progression and outcomes, as well as develop strategies to reduce the disparities in COVID-19 testing.
2. Advancements in Investigational Drugs
Two novel, investigational drugs targeting antibiotic-resistant infections moved into advanced development with HHS support. The first of the drug candidates looks to restore the body’s natural balance of bacteria, in order to prevent Clostridioides difficle infections. The second of the two drugs uses CRISPR technology, carried in a virus to kill Escherichia coli bacteria, causing recurring or drug resistant urinary tract infections. The aim is for this to soon move into the advanced stages of development.
3. Vitamin Levels Could be Beneficial
A recent study from Tehran University of Medical Sciences and Boston University Medical Center suggests that increasing the levels of vitamin D in the general population, particularly in those patients who have been hospitalized with COVID-19 could help to reduce its severity of the virus. The outcome of the study reported that sufficient vitamin D meant a significantly lower risk of adverse clinical outcomes, including becoming unconscious, hypoxia and even death.
4. Innovative Nasal Spray Could Treat COVID-19
The novel nasal spray, INNA-051, produced by Ena Respiratory could reach human trials within the next four months. INNA-051 was actually in development before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and was working towards broader respiratory viral epidemics, such as common colds and influenza.
However, the initial trials have shown that INNA-051 showed a statistically significant reduction of the virus by up to 96%.
5. T-Cell Based Vaccine
Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have gained a further insight into an alternative vaccine approach which could also help against influenza virus strains as well as COVID-19. The experimental vaccine, which is administered through the nose is able to deliver a long-lasting protection. The findings also help us to understand how to induce and maintain T-cell immunity. Researchers believe that the same approach might apply to several other respiratory pathogens, including COVID-19.
