Baker Ruskinn attended The Association for Radiation Research (ARR) for the 16th International Congress of Radiation Research which was held in Manchester, UK on 25th – 29th August 2019.
The congress, held at Manchester Central houses the city’s historic Central Railway Station, a feature of the Manchester cityscape since 1876 and now reinvented as a distinctive conference venue. Manchester Central is in the heart of the city centre.

Krista Rantanen, Ph.D. ( Baker’s Director of Scientific Applications) hosted a workshop titles “Irradiation in hypoxia made possible by Baker Ruskinn”.
Workshop Abstract:
Tumour microenvironment is a special, complex niche where conditions favour cancer progression. Conditions in this niche causes cancer cell selection and genetic instability thus supporting tumour growth and metastasis. Also the efficacy of cancer therapies is affected by this environment.
As a frontline therapy radiotherapy (RT) is a major treatment method for newly diagnosed cancer patients. As a consequence of RT cancer cells accumulate oxygen-dependent DNA damage, single strand breaks, DNA misrepair and chromosomal aberrations. RT also activates immune response.
Hypoxia is a hallmark of most solid tumours and known to correlate with tumour aggressiveness. Tumour cells can survive in hypoxic conditions. Because of hypoxia they experience less oxygen-dependent DNA damage thereby increasing radioresistance more than three times.
In the field of cancer research this problem of hypoxia has been known for decades but it still poses a significant negative influence in conventional cancer therapy. Understanding the molecular mechanisms by which cancer cells respond to hypoxia has brought possibilities to tackling the hypoxia-elicited radioresistance but lot of research still needs to be done.
To fully understand radioresistance biology creating a research environment that truly mimics the environment of a cancer cell when it is being irradiated is fundamental. Baker Ruskinn has developed the first research tool that enables irradiation experiments under hypoxic conditions. We provide a cell culture platform that enables scientist to do live cell imaging in high resolution under low oxygen conditions and combine the experiments radiation exposure.
